Yoga as resistance: Reclaiming Our Strength

Jim Edberg

Right now, it’s easy to feel powerless. Every day, it seems like there’s another attack on the LGBTQ+ community—on our rights, our bodies, our ability to exist safely in the world. But if there’s one thing we know, it’s that we are resilient. We have always found ways to push back, to survive, to thrive. And one of the most radical things we can do in times like these is to take care of ourselves.

At Melrose Yoga, we believe yoga isn’t just about movement—it’s about reclaiming power. It’s about creating a space where we can breathe, move, and exist without apology. In a world that tells us to be quiet, to be small, to disappear, our practice teaches us the opposite: to take up space, to stand strong, to center ourselves.

The Power of Presence

Oppressive systems rely on exhaustion. They want us too drained, too overwhelmed, too anxious to fight back. But when we step onto the mat, we interrupt that cycle. We slow down. We focus. We remind ourselves that no matter how chaotic things get, we always have our breath.

Yoga teaches us to be present, to notice what’s happening in our minds and bodies, to move through discomfort instead of shutting down. And that presence? That’s power. Because when we’re grounded, we can respond rather than react. We can show up for ourselves and for each other.

Taking Up Space as an Act of Defiance

Many of us grew up being told to make ourselves smaller—physically, emotionally, even spiritually. Whether it was hiding our queerness, changing how we spoke or dressed, or simply trying not to stand out, the message was clear: Don’t take up too much space.

Yoga flips that on its head. It teaches us to root ourselves, to expand, to reach beyond what we thought was possible. It reminds us that our bodies—no matter their shape, size, or history—are powerful.

And in naked yoga, that message goes even deeper. Shedding our clothes in a safe, supportive space is a radical act of self-acceptance. It’s a way of saying, I am enough exactly as I am. No shame. No hiding. Just being. And in a world that constantly tells us to change or conform, that’s resistance.

Healing as Protest

Being queer in today’s world is exhausting. The microaggressions, the discrimination, the constant fight just to be seen—it all takes a toll. And if we don’t take time to heal, to rest, to process, it wears us down.

Yoga helps us move through that stress instead of letting it live in our bodies. It reminds us that rest is necessary, that joy is not a luxury, and that taking care of ourselves isn’t about avoiding the fight—it’s about making sure we have the strength to keep going.

We Move Together

One of the most beautiful things about yoga is that it reminds us we’re not alone. We breathe together, move together, support each other. And in that connection, we find strength.

At Melrose Yoga, we aren’t just offering classes—we’re building community. We’re creating a space where LGBTQ+ folks can show up as their full selves, without fear, without judgment. Whether you join us for a clothed class, a nude class, or a private session, you are welcome here.

Join Us

Resistance looks different for everyone. Some of us march, some of us organize, some of us make art or share stories. And some of us step onto the mat, take a deep breath, and refuse to let the world break us.

If you’re looking for a place to reconnect, to recharge, to remind yourself of your strength, we’re here.

We’ll see you in class.
